Key Considerations:

Continuous Residency:
- The required period of continuous residency depends on how you obtained your lawful permanent residence. Typically, this period is five years.
- If you gained residency through marriage to a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (and you still maintain a bona fide marriage), the period may be shorter.
- Certain instances involving military service also allow for a shorter residency period.

Citizenship by Birth Overseas:
- U.S. citizenship can also be acquired or derived through birth overseas to a U.S. citizen parent.
- This requires careful evaluation of the laws in place at the time of birth, the relationship between the child and parents, the parents’ relationship, and the parents' residency in the U.S.
